From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Scarlett Moffatt has urged people to be kind to one another after receiving a handwritten letter criticising her appearance.

On Tuesday, the former Gogglebox star broke down in tears on her Instagram Story after sharing a photograph of the letter on the social media site.

The anonymous writer of the note referred to the star as “atrocious” and “fat” after watching her Channel 4 show The British Tribe Next Door.

The letter also criticised the way Moffatt talks and said her mouth “looks strange like a pork chop sliced in half”.

Alongside a snippet of the note, Moffat wrote: “The fact someone’s sent me a letter as they feel so strongly about my weight is ridiculous. Turns out I’m not even safe from vile comments in the comfort of my own home.

“I WILL NOT let bullies like this get me down. Let’s just be kind to people as we don’t know what’s going on in their lives.”

The reality star later posted videos of herself on Instagram Stories in tears, telling her two million followers the note had upset her more than she initially let on.

“I was going to pretend I'm not bothered but I think it's important I show I am,” Moffat said.

“You need to be kinder...you don't know what's going on in people’s lives. I am just a person. I'm someone's daughter. I'm someone's girlfriend. I'm someone's sister. I have feelings.”

In another video, the 29-year-old added that she had been “inundated with lovely messages” from fans since sharing the letter.

“I just need you all to be a little bit kinder because you don’t know what’s going on in people’s lives, so let’s make a little pledge to spread joy,” Moffat said.

“And if you haven’t got anything nice to say, just don’t voice it. I think the world would be a lot easier if that was the case. Be kind, is my message today.”

Last year, Moffatt hit out at trolls who criticised her appearance, and made an emotional plea for a change to be made “with our society”.

A series of tweets in July 2018, detailed how “grown adults” had forced her “to tears”, with further comments about her appearance.
