From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Duke of Sussex has revealed what his grandmother, the Queen, bought his son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, for Christmas.

Speaking to James Corden during an appearance on The Late Late Show , Prince Harry explained that the Queen asked him and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, what their one-year-old son would like.

“Interestingly, my grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle maker,” Harry said.

“She sent us a waffle maker for Archie so that’s breakfast now.”

The Prince went on to say how Meghan uses the present almost every day.

“Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix, in the waffle maker, flips it, out it comes, he loves it,” he said.

“Archie literally wakes up in the morning and says ‘waffle’.”

Elsewhere in the short appearance, Harry spoke about family life with Meghan in Santa Barbara, where they moved last year.

Harry said that, on a “regular night”, the couple will make Archie’s dinner, give him a bath and put him to bed before watching something together in bed, like the game show Jeopardy!

The Prince also spoke about his early stages of dating Meghan, telling Corden that dating as a member of the royal family is “flipped upside down”.

“We got to spend an enormous amount of time just the two of us,” he said.

“There were no distractions, and that was great, it was an amazing thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months.”

The clip comes before a groundbreaking interview between Harry and Meghan and Oprah Winfrey is due to air in the US.

The interview will be broadcast on 7 March on CBS and the couple are expected to talk about their life in America and future plans now that they have stepped back from the royal family.
