Your support makes all the difference.Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan led the tabloid tirade against Meghan Markle following her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, tweeting if it is “too late” to nominate her for the Oscars.
The presenter mounted a series of attacks on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after they made a series of claims about the hostility and racism they faced from the palace, as well as their relations with senior royals and the press.
“They’ve trashed [Harry’s] dad, they’ve trashed his brother, they’ve trashed his sister-in-law. They’ve trashed everything the Queen has worked so hard for and we’re supposed to believe they’re compassionate?” said Morgan on his show following the release of the full interview.
Calling the interview an “absolutely disgraceful betrayal” of the royal family, Morgan also took to Twitter to say that he expected this “vile destructive self-serving nonsense” from the Duchess but not Prince Harry.
“Harry wants America and the rest of the world to hate his own family, hate the monarchy and hate his country. I suggest everyone waits for the victims of his wife’s rampage to have their say on her outlandish claims before they do so,” he said.
In the interview, the couple spoke at length about the racism they faced from the royal family and the toll it took on Meghan’s mental health.
The Duchess revealed that in the months leading up to the birth of their son, there were conversations within the palace not only about whether Archie would be given a royal title and security but also about “how dark” his “skin might be when he’s born.” She said that her time as a royal was “almost unsurvivable”, adding that she was left with suicidal thoughts while the palace staff ignored her pleas for help.
Hitting out at Meghan for her claims, Morgan wrote: “I wouldn’t believe Meghan Markle if she gave me a weather report.”
Prince Harry also spoke about how he felt “really let down” by his father for not standing up for them at the time his wife faced scrutiny from the British tabloids, especially when he had gone through “something similar” during his marriage with Princess Diana. But the couple only had kind words for the Queen during the interview.
“The Queen has always been wonderful to me,” Meghan told Oprah. “I just really loved being in her company... she’s always been warm and inviting and really welcoming.”
Attacking the couple, Morgan continued: “Let’s be clear: Prince Harry and his wife just spent two hours trashing everything the Queen stands for & has worked so hard to maintain, whilst pretending to support her. And they did it while her 99yr-old husband Philip is seriously ill in hospital. It’s contemptible.”
Those reacting online to the interview have been largely polarised between supporting Meghan and Harry on one side and the royal family on the other. Many objected to Morgan’s line of attack.
“Did we watch the same interview? They told their side of the story in the most respectful way that they possibly could. One can only go so far in doing so when your own ‘family’ strips you of your protection and discriminates against your unborn mixed child,” wrote a user in reply to the Good Morning Britain host.
Another user slammed Morgan for bashing Markle for saying she was struggling with mental health issues. “Well done Piers. On International womens day what could be more fun for you than continuing to bash a heavily pregnant woman who has just confessed to mental health issues and contemplating suicide (sic).”
