Peter Phillips, the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II, has separated from his wife, Autumn Phillips, after 12 years of marriage.

A statement released on behalf of the couple stated that their split is “the best course of action” for their daughters, nine-year-old Savannah and seven-year-old Isla.

“After informing the HM The Queen and members of both families last year, Peter and Autumn have jointly agreed to separate,” the statement read.

“They had reached the conclusion that this was the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship.”

The statement outlined that the couple’s choice to divorce and share custody of their children was made “after many months of discussions”, adding that while their decision was “sad”, it was also “amicable”.

It stated that the couple’s “first priority” is the “continued well being and upbringing” of their children.

“Both families were naturally sad at the announcement, but fully supportive of Peter and Autumn in the joint decision to co-parent their children,” the statement read.

“Both Peter and Autumn have remained in Gloucestershire to bring up their two children where they have settled for a number of years.”

The statement concluded by saying the couple have “requested privacy and compassion” for their daughters as their family “continues to adapt to these changes”.

Phillips first met Ms Phillips (née Kelly) in 2003, who was then a Canadian management consultant.

They announced their engagement in July 2007, before marrying at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle a year later.

Phillips is the eldest child of Princess Anne, and older brother to Zara Tindall.

During a recent appearance at a JP Morgan-sponsored event, the Duke of Sussex spoke out about his and the Duchess of Sussex’s decision to leave the royal family.

Following the duke and duchess’ announcement, Prince Harry said he felt there was “no other option” than to stand down from his royal duties while delivering a speech at a private dinner for the Sentebale charity.
