The interview had been hyped up throughout the week with several teaser clips released, and the full programme delivered on this promise, with revelations from the Duchess of Sussex about the challenges of her brush with the British royal family, the racism she and Harry allegedly experienced and her own mental health struggle.
But beyond the spotlight on the former royals, Oprah has herself received a lot of attention and appreciation for the way she handled the historic interview.
Even before the interview was over, those viewing and reacting online hailed it as a masterclass in interviewing.
“Oprah is the greatest interviewer of all time. That’s it. That’s the tweet. #OprahMeghanHarry,” Twitter user Annalise Mantz Lowenstein wrote.
“It’s Oprah’s follow up questions for me. A Journalism interviewing masterclass,” said Nneka M Okona.
That sentiment – that we were witnessing a masterclass – was widely shared by others.
“Therapy has been helping, but honestly, watching @Oprah Masterclass has been refreshing and more insightful,” wrote Liam B Colvin.
“@Oprah (sic) greatest strength as an interviewer is her laser focus in listening to what her subject is saying, pausing and following up on what they just said, not thinking about her next question. No one is better at it," Mark Rosen wrote.
Sunday’s tell-all interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex included damaging accusations that an unnamed family member raised “concerns” with Harry about the colour of baby Archie’s skin, as well as the claim from Harry that his father Prince Charles stopped picking up his calls.
The two-hour interview was broadcast first in the US, and will air in the UK on Monday night. The royal family hasn’t yet issued any official statement on the allegations made during the interview.
