Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Royal fans are donating to charity in honour of the Duchess of Sussex’ baby, who is due to be born any day now.
The donations have been made as part of an online social media campaign dubbed #GlobalSussexBabyShower, which has gone viral on Twitter as users from around the world are sharing news of their charitable acts and encouraging others to do the same.
The campaign was launched by an anonymous Twitter user who goes by the handle @freepeeper.
“We’re kicking off a global fundraiser on Sunday, 31st March in honour of #BabySussex and the compassion and altruism of The #DukeandDuchessofSussex,” the fan account wrote on Friday.
“We’ve selected three charities to benefit in this effort. Tweet your donations and include the hashtag #GlobalSussexBabyShower”.
One of the charities that has noticed a surge in donations as a result of the campaign is CAMFED, which aims to educate young women living in poverty.
The organisation thanked donors on its Twitter account on Saturday, expressing gratitude to all the "amazing, warm-hearted and generous people”.
“You completely floored us today when you started sending your support and donations in response to @freepeeper’s #GlobalSussexBabyShower campaign. You’ve made our year!”
The other two charities included in the campaign were Mayhew, an animal welfare organisation, and Well Child, which supports young people with serious illnesses.
Both organisations have publicly thanked @freepeeper for launching the campaign that prompted a subsequent surge in donations.
The Duchess of Sussex has not announced her due date, but a statement released by Kensington Palace said the couple were expecting the baby to be born in spring 2019.
