At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Actor and activist Rose McGowan has broken her arm after checking the US election results while stood on the stairs.

On Thursday, the #MeToo campaigner shared a photo on Instagram which showed her sitting in a hospital bed in Mexico with her left arm in a cast.

“Reading US election results while on the stairs = bone break,” McGowan wrote in the caption.

The former Charmed actor also used the opportunity to criticise the US healthcare system.

“It cost $250 in Mexico for my emergency room visit, compared to a likely $10k hospital bill in California for the same accident,” she wrote.

“USA is not the land of the free, it's the land of the overcharged.”

In the comments section, McGowan explained why she is currently in Mexico.

When one follower asked: ”Why not stay?”, she replied: “I am."

McGowan added: “My father lived in MX for years, tia y tio are maestros in San Miguel DA, it’s in my blood to stay in the heart centered land.

“I came here to heal my insides and it’s really helping.”

The actor has openly criticised both Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the past.

Writing on Twitter, McGowan previously accused Mr Biden and the Democratic Party of achieving “nothing”.

“What have the Democrats done to solve ANYTHING? Help the poor? No. Help black & brown people? No. Stop police brutality? No. Help single mothers? No. Help children? No,” she wrote.

“You have achieved nothing. NOTHING.”

McGowan has also previously called Mr Trump a “disease”.

In an open letter to the media in 2016, she wrote: “WE ARE BEING POISONED. We, the public, are being sickened by an ever expanding assault on our right to live a healthy and free life."
