Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

To mark the James Ensor retrospective (see feature, opposite page), the Independent on Sunday has teamed up with Tourism Flanders-Brussels to offer readers the chance to win a luxury weekend for two in Brussels.

Brussels will be the European City of Culture in 2000 and offers excellent sightseeing, shopping and dining facilities, with more Michelin-starred restaurants per square mile than any other European city. The antiques fair in the Place du Grand Sablon and flea market in the Place de Jeu-de- Balles are ideal for bargain-hunters. Among hundreds of bars and cafes, Le Greenwich is celebrated for its decor, and also plays host to the city's chess- players.

The prize on offer includes two first-class Eurostar tickets, a double or twin hotel-room for two weekend nights, and free admission to the Ensor exhibition. The trip must be taken over a weekend between 7 January and 4 February inclusive.

To enter, just answer the following three questions:

1) Which great Belgian singer-songwriter wrote "Ne me quitte pas"?

2) Which famous exponent of art nouveau designed many of the city's buildings?

3) A frieze by Paul Delvaux decorates which Brussels metro station?

Send your answers, with your name, address, and daytime telephone number to: Ensor Competition, Culture, Independent on Sunday, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London, E14 5DL; to arrive by Wednesday 7 December. The sender of the first correctly answered entry pulled from the hat after the closing date will win the trip to Brussels. No cash alternative. The editor's decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. Usual competition rules apply. Results will be published on 11 December.

For information on travel and accommodation in Brussels and beyond, call Tourism Flanders-Brussels on 0171 867 0311. Brochures are available on 09001 887 799.
