From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Poundland founder Steve Smith is selling his sprawling countryside home for £3.95 million.

The 55-year-old entrepreneur originally put his Shropshire mansion on the market in November 2014 for £6.5million, however, he has since reduced the asking price due to lack of interest.

The Romsley home is currently being advertised by estate agents Andrew Grant and the father-of-three hopes to attract a buyer swiftly so that he can downsize to a smaller home in the Midlands.

It's described on the estate agent's website as an "impressive and well equipped country house with stunning views over the Severn Valley."

Smith and his wife Tracy, 54, originally purchased the six-bedroom home in 2002 for £2.2 million and spent an additional £4 million on renovations, meaning the couple will lose money on the impending sale.

“We have had the house on the market for a while and had three people interested but their chains have broken down so we’ve put it on the market again,” he said.

“Since the kids have grown up and moved out it’s just me and the wife and it’s a big place for both of us to live in."

The property is set on 28-acres of land and comes complete with a grand hall, a billiard room and an indoor swimming pool that even has its own changing rooms.

It also features two gate lodges, landscaped gardens and paddocks.

"The house is very special to us and it will be a real wrench for us to leave,” Smith added.

"We began refurbishing the home in 2000 and finally finished it in 2007.

"It was a real labour of love and no expense was spared. I especially love our home pub with a fully stocked bar. It's really unique and we've had some great parties there."

Smith founded Poundland in 1990 at the tender age of 27 after his father lent him £50,000 to get started.

He sold his share of the retail chain in 2002 for £50 million.
