From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The woman who starred in the controversial Peloton ad that went viral this week has been cast in a new role for Ryan Reynolds’ gin brand.
On Friday, Reynolds tweeted the new commercial for Aviation Gin with the caption: “Exercise bike not included.”
In the Peloton ad, which has been deemed “sexist” and “misogynistic”, a woman documents her year-long fitness journey after she is given a stationary exercise bike by her husband for Christmas.
The clip ends with the actress thanking her husband for the gift. “A year ago, I didn’t realise how much this would change me,” she says at one point.
In the new advert, the same actress who played the grateful wife has exchanged the Peloton bike for gin martinis, which is she drinking alongside two friends in a bar.
After staring hauntingly into the camera for a few moments as her friends look on concerned, the woman says: “This gin is really smooth.”
“You’re safe here,” her friend tells her, before the Peloton actress, Monica Ruiz, proposes a toast to “new beginnings” before downing her entire cocktail.
The ad concludes with one of the friends saying: “You look great by the way.”
Unlike the reaction to the Peloton advert, the social media reception to the gin commercial has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Wow, this is marketing genius at work,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another said: “Quite possibly the best response to a messed up commercial ever.”
Following the backlash over the Peloton advert, Sean Hunter, the actor who played the husband, addressed the controversy.
"People turned down a pretty dark path and it turned into a nasty thing," he told Good Morning America on Friday. "Once something goes viral, and it turns negative, people jump on that negative bandwagon and start to create any dialogue they want... My image is being associated with sexism, with the patriarchy, with abuse, with these words that I am seeing people write about me - that’s not who I am."
