Oscars 2020: Who are the nominees?

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Our roundups are unbiased. On some occasions, we earn revenue if you click the links and buy the products, but we never allow this to affect our coverage.

Every year, those who are nominated for the top gongs at the Academy Awards receive unprecedented levels of attention and fanfare, their names cemented in the history books of Hollywood.

They also receive the additional perk of a luxurious array of freebies, regardless of whether they come away with the prize.

For the past two decades, the “Everyone Wins” Nominee Gift Bags have been organised by marketing company Distinctive Assets and given to the nominees in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director categories.

The gift bag is not officially affiliated with the Oscars, despite having become an annual fixture the nominees can expect to receive.

This year, the nominees in the aforementioned categories will receive gifts including a 12-day cruise, a custom stained glass portrait and a 24K gold vape pen – because, of course, if anyone needs an array of opulent, free gifts, it’s the elite members of the entertainment industry.

These nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio, Renée Zellweger, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.

Lash Fary, founder of Distinctive Assets, said “every human being, regardless of wealth or fame, appreciates the simple joy of a gift”.

“While our ‘Everyone Wins’ Gift Bag is certainly not given based on need, it is assembled with a profound sense of gratitude for the incredible performances these talented individuals shared with all of us this year,” Fary said.

According to Forbes, the value of this year’s gift bag totals at around $215,000 (£164,733).

Fary added that while the gift bag “does have an impressive value”, a “great gift has nothing to do with a price tag”.
