Opening This Week: Jazz
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Andy Sheppard's Moving Image (Ronnie Scott's, W1, 0171 439 0747, Mon-Sat). Devastatingly good saxophonist with a new band.
Egberto Gismonti with the Electra Strings (Bristol St George's, 0117 9230359, Wed; Brighton Sallis Benney Theatre, 01273 709709, Thurs; RFH, SE1, 0171 960 4242, Fri; Southampton Turner Sims, 01703 595151, Sat; Dartington Great Hall, 01803 863073, Sun 22 Feb). Paul Motian Trio with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell plus Kenny Wheeler with Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell and Dave Holland (Barbican, EC1, 0171 638 5403, Sat). That's quite enough names, thank you, but this must be the thinking-person's jazz gig, with just about the best saxophonist, guitarist, trumpeter, and bassist going.
Joey Calderazzo Trio (Pizza Express, W1, 0171 439 8722, Tues-Sat). Frantic, headlong, contemporary bop from New York pianist.
Nikki Yeoh's Infinitum (Glasgow Tron Theatre, 0141 552 4627, Tues; Stirling Tolbooth, 01786 473544, Wed; Edinburgh Tron Tavern, 0131 554 4510, Thurs; Montrose Links Hotel, 01674 671000, Fri; Aberdeen Lemon Tree, 01224 642230, Sun 22 Feb). Sparkling witty pianist with Michael Mondesir on bass.
