So much so, that the first Sunday after New Year’s just happens to be the biggest online dating day of the year.
Dubbed “Dating Sunday”, this year the event falls on 6 January and industry experts are predicting it will be the busiest yet.
After analysing activity data from the past two years on this day, dating app Hinge found that there was a huge spike in conversations, an increase in dates being set up and higher response rates to messages.
In 2017, it revealed that 41 per cent more people started conversations on Dating Sunday than the week before – a figure which rose to 59 per cent the following year.
Hinge also found that 62 per cent more people set up dates on this day in 2018, compared to 36 per cent more people in 2017.
Additionally, the dating app reported a 16 per cent increase in daily user activity in 2017 and, in 2018, that number shot up to 22.5 per cent with 36 per cent higher response to messages and 20 per cent more conversations taking place.
This year, the app expects to see an even greater surge in new users, conversations, and dates on 6 January “as singles resolve to meet someone great in the New Year”.
Hinge isn’t the only dating app reporting such figures. According to Match.com, 2.75m new members signed up for the site on the day in 2017 with a 42 per cent increase the following year.
Similarly, Tinder has previously asserted that 10 per cent of all its matches are made in the month of January, while dating app OkCupid is predicting a 70 per cent increase in users on Dating Sunday in 2019.
