A woman from Florida has given birth to a baby girl weighing 13 pounds and five-ounces – almost twice the weight of the average newborn.
Proud parents Chrissy and Larry Corbitt say they had no idea how large their bundle of joy would be and likened the size of their daughter, Carleigh, to that of a toddler.
“When the doctor was pulling her out of me I just start hearing them all laughing and excited in the operating room,” Chrissy told ABC News.
“The doctor said, “Oh my gosh, she’s going to be 15-pounds. I don’t think this baby is going to end. Are there two of them?” recalled husband Larry.
“Her cheeks were so chunky and she was just so fat. She was so gorgeous, of course.”
“They were throwing out numbers and when they showed her to me and said 13.5, I couldn’t believe it.
“It looked like they pulled a toddler out of my belly. She’s so big.”
Doctors who performed the C-section were just as shocked and even suggested that she might be having twins.
But, Carleigh could have turned out much heavier because she arrived a week earlier than expected. If mum Chrissy had gone full term, she would have weighed 14 pounds – the same weight as the heaviest baby born in the United States this year.
The parents celebrated their new arrival with a photoshoot by photographer Debbye Benson of Sweet Smiles Photography Studio and the photos are adorable.
“She’s just filled with rolls. She’s just a big squishy baby. She’s so adorable,” said the proud mom.
The newborn is even having to wear clothes meant for a nine-month old and uses size 3 nappies.
While a delivery of this size would have proved difficult for any woman, husband Larry said that because of his wife’s anaemia she had to have three blood transfusions during the C-section.
But, that both mother and baby are doing great.
“My wife is a trooper for everything she’s gone through,” he added.
