Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Presenting the "2010 World Performance Car" of the year prize at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, the World Car panel described the $150,000 (€110,730) Audi R8 as satisfying "our hunger for a street car that lives up to the excitement of the original Le Mans series-dominating [Audi] R8 LMP1".
Many publications managed to clock a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of just 3.4 seconds, pushing the panel of 59 international judges to select the car ahead of the Ferrari California and the Porsche 911 GT3. It is the second time the Audi R8 has taken the award - it also won in 2008's ceremony, whilst the RS4 won in 2007.
In a separate award, the Chevrolet Camaro was selected as World Design Car of the Year. It beat the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Kia Soul, which were also chosen by a panel of five top designers. The World Car jurors then selected the overall winner.
"The new Camaro leans on its heritage but does so in an artful, modern fashion," said the design panel. "Although it borrows some of its styling cues from the first generation Camaro, they all contribute to a simple, pure and modern appearance."
The Volkswagen BlueMotion diesel models were also honored as top World Green Car of the Year, complementing the Volkswagen Polo's victory as overall World Car of the Year. The BlueMotion vehicles (Golf, Passat and Polo) were selected above the hybrid Honda Insight and Toyota Prius to take the award.
The World Car jury is comprised of 59 international automotive journalists from 25 countries.
