Three hybrids and two diesel cars staff the field of finalists for the 2010 Green Car of the Year award, which will be presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December.
The shortlist, which was revealed on October 7, features five eco-friendly cars from all corners of the globe: the Audi A3 TDI, Honda Insight, Mercury Milan Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Golf TDI. The winner of one of the auto industry's premier environmentally-friendly prizes will be announced December 3.
The prize considers only road-ready cars and not experimental or concept vehicles. Last year's winner was the Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
The entries from Audi and Volkswagen reveal Europe's preference for clean diesel technology; Honda's Insight hybrid has been a true competitor to the Toyota Prius in Japan, but not the US thus far; while the Mercury Milan Hybrid from Chrysler showcases their advanced-hybrid technology in a more upscale sedan.
An eclectic and international jury panel will choose the victor: American media mogul and talk show host Jay Leno, Carl Pope, executive director of the oldest environmental group in the US, the Sierra Club, French environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, Green Car Journal editors and others.
Green Car Journal, a quarterly publication focusing on vehicles that use environmentally-friendly technology, organizes the award.
