Volkswagen takes the wraps off the new Touareg
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Volkswagen has released the first pictures of the next version of its Touareg SUV. The most obvious developments, apart from styling changes designed to bring the Touareg's look into line with that of other recent VW models, are weight savings of up to 200 kg compared with the outgoing model, and the availability for the first time of a hybrid drivetrain.
Two diesel engines will be available, a 3.0 litre V6 and a 4.2 litre V8, while the hybrid version combines a 3.3 litre V6 petrol engine with electric power to achieve 34mpg on the combined cycle. The hybrid has a top speed of 149 mph and can accelerate to 100km/h (62mph) in 6.5 seconds. Most versions of the new Touareg will have an eight-speed gearbox and fuel-saving stop-start technology.
Production of the new Touareg for the UK market will start in June and the first deliveries will be made in August. The current model is a sister car of Porsche's Cayenne – so some changes can probably be expected there, as well.
