Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It’s said that for more than half the world’s population, the first car they ever set eyes on is a Land Rover.
Well, precisely none of the Land Rovers in question cost as much as the one that’s just been sold at auction by Bonhams of London.
Defender 2,000,000, a one-off created for charity in homage to the two million Landies that have been built since the first 80” in 1948, went under the hammer at £400,000.
The proceeds will be shared between the Born Free Foundation and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, both of which Land Rover has a long history of supporting.
The Defender, a 90 Station Wagon (normal price £25,265), was built with the aid of various celebs and Land Rover brand ambassadors. In keeping with the Landy’s up-for-anything image, adventurer Bear Grylls was among those wielding the spanners.
Perhaps also in keeping for a vehicle that’s travelled all around the world, this one will too. The winning bid is understood to have come from an overseas buyer.
