When is it going?

It has gone. For 2005, the Cherokee has got a new look, updated interior, and a new 2.8 litre diesel engine. Chrysler has sold 12,000 since it was launched in 2001, and the new one looks a bit different but is still instantly recognisable as a Jeep.

What's good about it?

It's a Jeep. That virtually guarantees that it will be brilliant at tearing around off-road and towing stuff. Large engines help, so it has more pulling power than some Euro rivals.

Behind the wheel, you have a commanding view, and parking is easier than in some 4x4s. The steering-wheel may only adjust for height, but at least the driver's seat moves up and down. On-road, it is surprisingly refined, and wind noise is minimal.

What's bad about it?

It isn't as sophisticated as Euro and Japanese rivals. On the road, the solid rear axle means that the ride is nowhere near as smooth as a Land-Rover Freelander. In normal driving, the manual gearbox can feel basic.

How much?

The best bet is to go to a Jeep dealer and find a demonstrator, or a recently registered example. I found a late 2004 registered 3.7 Limited model at Swain & Jones (01252 716201) at £20,795 (£23,020 retail).

Any snags?

The Cherokee has proved a tough model in service and, compared with the old model, there aren't the interior rattles and squeaks.
