Tesla Motors have revealed how the sounds of their environmentally friendly sports car, the Tesla Roadster, were recently recorded for inclusion in the critically acclaimed Xbox 360 game Forza Motorsport 3.

Forza 3 was critically acclaimed on its release in October of this year, gaining 9/10 ratings from reviewers at Edge and Eurogamer, 9.5 from Gamespot, 9.4 from IGN, and a 5-Star rating from Giant Bomb.

The 248hp Roadster is no slowpoke, able to accelerate from a standing start to 60mph / 97kph in 3.9 seconds, though on production models the top speed is limited to 125mph / 201kph. It was also chosen by Australian CEO Simon Hackett as his high-speed energy efficient ride during the 1877 mile (3021 km) 2009 Global Green Challenge, breaking the previous world record by travelling 313 miles (501 km) on a single charge.

For the makers of Forza 3, capturing the authentic noise of a Tesla Roadster in action was something they were keen to do, and owner and enthusiast Tom Burt told Tesla he had a lot of fun putting it through its paces. Technicians from Microsoft Game Studios strapped boom microphones to the sides and rear of the car, with other smaller devices in the trunk and on the front of the vehicle.

The engine sound of a Tesla Roadster is similar to the turbo whine on a petrol or diesel engine, or the sound of a jet engine. As well as featuring in video games, it was also integral to the sound design for Batman's motorcycle in the most recent Batman film, The Dark Knight, a production which went on to win an Oscar for Best Achievement In Sound Design.

The Roadster was not included in the initial retail version of Forza 3 and therefore is thought likely to appear as part of an additional content pack at a later date.
