Your support makes all the difference.General Motors has confirmed that an electric vehicle under the Cadillac brand is to enter series production.
The Cadillac ELR will be a luxury sibling for the Chevrolet Volt, an extended-range electric vehicle which General Motors launched last December.
Like the Volt, it is to use a lithium-ion battery and electric drive unit alongside a four-cylinder gasoline generator, which kicks in to recharge the battery when it nears depletion.
Early pictures and videos show a forward-leaning profile and a 2+2 design, broadly similar to the Converj concept car which hinted at the model when it was released last year.
General Motors says that details on performance, price and timing will be announced later.
Extending its electric-drive technology across brands was always a likely bet for General Motors, which is battling for market share with Nissan and its Leaf electric vehicle and will soon face Ford's Focus Electric.
However, it's the latest move in a product onslaught from Cadillac, which will add two new vehicles to its lineup next year - a top-line XTS large sedan and a smaller compact sedan codenamed ATS.
