From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Miley Cyrus has revealed she will not have children until the planet is treated better, because she is not “bringing in another person to deal with that”.

Speaking to Elle in an interview published Thursday, the pop star discussed nature, which she said is female, and the negative effects humans are having on the environment.

“When she’s angry, don’t f**k with her,” Cyrus said. “That’s the way that I feel women are like right now. The earth is angry.”

The "Mother’s Daughter" singer said the planet has been depleted and that she will not have children “until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water”.

“We’ve been doing the same thing to the earth that we do to women. We just take and take and expect it to keep producing. And it’s exhausted. It can’t produce,” the 26-year-old said. “We’re getting handed a piece-of-s**t planet, and I refuse to hand that down to my child.

“Until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water, I’m not bringing in another person to deal with that.”

According to the pop star, she believes other millennials feel similarly about not wanting to have children right now because “we know that the Earth can’t handle it”.

Despite the feelings of her generation, the singer said there is an immense pressure on the female sex to “keep the planet populated” and that not having children is often a choice met with “judgement and anger” from outsiders.

“If you don’t want children, people feel sorry for you, like you’re a cold, heartless b***h who’s not capable of love,” Cyrus said.

Last November, the singer and her husband Liam Hemsworth experienced first-hand the impact nature can have when they lost their Malibu home to the California wildfires.

At the time, the couple donated $500,000 to The Malibu Foundation, which used funds to help “those in financial need, emergency relief assistance, community rebuilding, wildfire prevention and climate change resilience”.

“With natural disasters, you don’t get a choice. You surrender,” Cyrus told Elle.
