From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. From Beyonce’s feathered ombré gown to Rihanna’s canary yellow, fur-trimmed cape, every year the most avant-garde garb makes its way up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and this year was no exception.

Honouring 74-year-old Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo - a figure whose pioneering work has been at the cutting edge of fashion for more than 40 years – the annual fundraising gala servedup some looks that are sure to go down in red carpet history.

Here, we bring you the most weird and wonderful looks from one of the premier fashion events of the year.

Rihanna in Comme des Garcons

The singer never fails us in the fashion department and didn’t disappoint as she arrived as one of the few celebs to don a Comme de Garcons dress. Wearing a 3D petalled look from the designer’s Autumn/Winter 2016 collection, red gladiator heels and a beauty look inspired by Kawakubo’s Spring/Summer 1997 runway show, Rihanna nailed the night’s theme.

Solange Knowles in Thom Browne

Never one to shy away from an inventive look, Solange Knowles opted for a high-fashion take on the puffer coat. Larger-than-life with an oversized train and figure skating-eque shoes the singer’s distinctive style stole the show.

Helen Lasichanh in Comme des Garcons

A couple known for their unique style, Pharrell Williams’ wife Helen Lasichanh was right in her element with this year’s Met Gala theme. Earning some major fashion cred for sticking to the theme, she sported a bright red, armless creation straight from Comme des Garcons collection last season.

Cara Delevingne in Chanel

After recently shaving her hair for a new role as a cancer patient, model Cara Delevingne embraced her bald head with silver paint and Swarovski crystals. Continuing the theme, she complimented her silver-coated scalp with an out-of-this-world evening suit from Chanel.

As Met Gala’s co-chair, Katy Perry went all-out this year pushing her fashion limits to the edge. Wearing a creation from Maison Margiela titled ‘Artisinal,’ the singer’s dress was swathed in layers and layers of red tulle and finished with a veiled headpiece.
