Meghan Markle’s wedding veil was more than just a statement piece – as the Duchess of Sussex has revealed there was a sweet tribute to Prince Harry sewn inside.

During a preview of the upcoming documentary Queen of the World, Markle remarked that sewn into her veil was her something blue – a piece of fabric taken from the dress she wore on her first date with Prince Harry.

The Duchess shared the romantic detail as she gazed upon her Givenchy wedding gown and 16-foot veil designed by Clare Waight Keller for the first time since her royal wedding.

“Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside – it was my something blue,” she told conservator Hannah Belcher, who works with the Royal Collection Trust.

“It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date,” she added as Belcher remarks that that’s “about the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard.”

The romantic detail was just one sentimental aspect of the Duchess’s veil, which also featured lace adorned with flowers representing each country in the Commonwealth – a testament to the bride’s new home.

Markle also requested that two of her favourite flowers were on the veil – the wintersweet poppy, which grows at Kensington Palace, and the California poppy, the state flower of California.

“It was important for me, especially as a part of the royal family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated,” the Duchess said of the touching tribute to her new family in a clip of the upcoming documentary.

“And I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know. And he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together, and I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us, and the role that we play, and the work that we’re going to continue to do in the Commonwealth countries,” she continued.

The two-part documentary about the royal family will debut 25 September on ITV in the UK and 1 October on HBO in the US.

For those eager to see Markle’s wedding dresses in person, outfits from the royal wedding will be on display at Windsor Castle in an exhibition called ‘A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex” from 26 October to 6 January 2019.
