Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared their first Instagram post since they announced they would be stepping back as senior members of the royal family.

On Friday, the couple emphasised their continued dedication to charity work with photos from their recent visit to The Hubb Community Kitchen.

“Earlier this week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to visit the women of The Hubb Community Kitchen and ‘Together, Our Community Cookbook.’ These women came together in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy to cook meals for their families and neighbours who had been displaced from the fire.

“With funds from the successful cookbook, they have now been able to share their spirit of community with so many more. The Hubb continues to work with local organisations to build hope, bring comfort and provide not simply a warm meal, but with it, a sense of togetherness.”

The post continues: “The Duke and Duchess were so happy to reconnect with the women and hear about the projects they continue to develop to help those in their community and beyond.”

In the photos, the duke and duchess can be seen laughing and smiling with the women, before sitting down to a meal together.

Meghan has been helping and supporting the community kitchen, her first solo project after becoming a member of the royal family, since 2018.

In addition to paying numerous visits to the communal kitchen, the duchess launched the kitchen’s cookbook as a way of raising money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The couple’s latest Instagram post has prompted an outpouring of support from their fans.

“So proud of you guys! Keep forging your own path, your own way, for your own happiness and family. You are changing the rules and that’s admirable,” one person wrote.

Another said: “We love you guys and your continued effort to help those in need and especially within the local London communities! Please never stop helping others and bettering this world.”

In addition to announcing their intentions to step back from the royal family, become financially independent and move part-time to North America, the duke and duchess revealed this week that they have updated their media policy in a way that they believe will “enable them to share more, with you, directly” via their social media accounts.
