From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Speaking to CBS This Morning’s Gayle King for an upcoming special “Meghan and Harry Plus One,” Martin said despite her new circumstances, the Duchess of Sussex is still “Meghan to me”.
And, according to Martin, who did Meghan’s makeup for her wedding to Prince Harry last May and who attended the duchess’s New York City baby shower, the royal has remained down to Earth.
“I could totally see her making her own baby food,” Martin told King during a preview for the TV special, which airs 17 May: “She loves to cook.
Touching on Meghan’s lavish baby shower, which King said “turned into a thing,” Martin admitted the former actress’s friends just wanted her “home” to celebrate.
“All of us here just wanted her home and to celebrate her new baby,” he said of the event, which cost a reported $200,000 (£152,000).
The makeup artist then became tearful as he explained to King that the 37-year-old does not deserve the accusations that she is difficult or “demanding”.
“You hear these stories and there’s no truth to them,” he said. “I think cause I know her so well and I know she doesn’t deserve all this negative press.”
During the interview, King also spoke to Meghan’s friend, actress Janina Gavankar, who revealed that the duchess “always wanted to be a mum” and has spoken about becoming one for “over a decade”.
“She’s gonna be such a good mother,” she said. “I think she will be very low maintenance. I think that she will be very hands on.”
As for the couple’s newborn baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Martin said he is the “dawn of a new generation”.
“Their child is going to represent what the world is now.”
The CBS special airs Friday at 8pm ET.
