From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

She’s about to be a part of the royal family, but long before Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry, she was holding up briefcases on Deal or No Deal.

In 2006, Markle was an aspiring actor struggling to make ends meet and began modelling on the popular game show in between auditions.

While she described the show as a “learning experience”, the royal bride-to-be has confessed that it’s a role she would like to forget.

“I would put that in the category of things I was doing while I was auditioning to try to make ends meet,” Markle told Esquire in 2013.

“It helped me to understand what I would rather be doing.

“So if that's a way for me to gloss over that subject, then I will happily shift gears into something else.”

The gig ultimately proved disheartening, Markle admits, given that she never held the winning briefcase.

"I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down," she added.

Footage of Markle modelling on the program has been obtained by Inside Edition and shows the aspiring actor walking on stage with her briefcase wearing a short red dress and high heels.

Her Hollywood break came in 2011 when she was cast in the lead role of Rachel Zane in the popular US legal drama Suits.

However, it was announced earlier this month that Markle would be leaving the popular series.

In light of her engagement to Prince Harry, which was announced in a statement released by Clarence House on Monday, the actor’s departure from the show makes sense.

It has since been revealed that Markle will live with the Prince in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
