Katsu chicken curry fans rejoice, McDonald’s is launching a chicken nuggets version of the popular Asian dish.

The limited-edition Katsu Curry McNuggets, chicken coated in crispy katsu curry panko breadcrumbs and served with the distinctive curry dip, will go on sale before 2021.

“The new limited-edition Katsu Curry Chicken McNuggets are a match made in heaven and everything you didn’t know you needed until this very moment,” said a McDonald’s spokesperson on the fried dish.

Customers can order a box of Japanese-inspired nuggets from £3.59 for six, £4.09 for nine, or 20 pieces for £5.99.

They’ll be available in a McDonald’s near you from 30 December –  the fast-food outlet’s way of saying goodbye to a hard year for many. “The tastiest way to wave goodbye to 2020 and start the new year as you mean to go on,” said the company.

But there’s not long to sample them, Katsu Curry McNuggets will be on sale for six weeks only.

People on social media are already getting excited about the news. “STOP IT… you really do listen and provide the GOODS,” posted Emily Canham under McDonald’s Twitter announcement. “They’re BANGING”, replied McDonald's.

“How amazing do these look!!” Said user J-Alice S, on the company’s original tweet.

The katsu dish was something the UK public has been craving during the pandemic. Wagamama katsu curry recipe came seventh in the most-searched recipes in Google in 2020. Also high on the list, in fourth place, was KFC – proving how much Brits love fried chicken.

Katsu curry was invented in Tokyo in 1899, and is usually made up of a breadcrumbed meat cutlet (like schnitzel or escalope, but made using panko breadcrumbs) and is served with shredded cabbage and a thick, sweet tonkatsu sauce.

McDonald's is currently running its Christmas menu, which includes a huge double Big Mac, available until 29 December.
