From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

There was once a time when marriage proposals were a simple and private affair but, thanks in part to the advent of social media, it seems simply bending down on one knee will no longer suffice.

From popping the question during a couple’s yoga workout to creating a movie trailer, proposals are not what they used to be.

Just ask this man who decided to take his proposal to a whole new level of commitment with a “will you marry me?” tattoo.

On Tuesday Juris Jurison, a tattoo artist at Gods of Ink in Gloucester, was asked to give an unnamed customer a tattoo that featured the all-important question alongside a “Yes” and “No” box for his girlfriend to respond.

Luckily, his partner saw the romantic side and checked “Yes” with a small heart-shaped tattoo.

The parlous shared a photograph of the newly-engaged couple on Facebook, writing: “What an amazing way to propose.

“Juris’ client had ‘Will you marry me’ and two boxes for yes or no on his chest. His girlfriend who was with him and had no idea what he was having done was shocked by his proposal and she happily ticked the ‘Yes’ box.

“Congratulations to you both. The ring is on the opposite finger as they are from Bulgaria so wear the ring on the right hand.”

A number of social media users wished the couple the best of luck, with one person writing: “Such an amazing couple, so happy for you both.”

However, others pointed out that the decision to propose with a tattoo was a risky move, commenting: “Imagine if she'd said no!”

Jurison, who has worked at the tattoo parlous for two years, said proposal tattoos are not a “common occurrence“ but that he was a fan of the idea.

"It was rather unique. It reminded me of being at school when you wrote notes at school, asking your girlfriend if she wanted to go out with you,” Jurison said.

“It was quite a random occurrence, he rung up about an hour before to ask if we could do it because either people wouldn't do it or didn't have space.

"He was nervous at the beginning, but I think it is a really cool idea. 'Carpe diem', as they say."
