From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. At the moment, it seems as if you can’t go online without seeing somebody doing the ‘10-Year Challenge’.

The social media sensation sees users upload a photo from 2009 alongside one from this year, with the aim of seeing how much they’ve changed in that time.

Although it’s unknown as to where the trend actually started, it’s been suggested that it could have something to do with Facebook’s “Memories” feature, which reminds you of long-forgotten photos.

However, others suspect it is because 2009 was the year social media really began to take off.

Celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Jessica Biel and Tyra Banks have posted their challenges, and now, even Mariah Carey has joined in on the action, although in her classic style she’s added her own stamp to the meme.

The ‘Fantasy’ singer took to Instagram to join in this week, uploading two identical pictures of herself holding a puppy while dressed in a lingerie set and a floral kimono.

Underneath the image, the caption reads: “I don’t get this 10 year challenge, time is not something I acknowledge. *Picture taken at some point prior to today,”

Fans of the star loved the joke, with several writing comments on Mariah’s post that praised her.

“Hahahah, don’t ever change,” said one of her fans.

While another branded her the “Queen of anniversaries”.

Mariah, who is one of the world’s most successful music artists, has enjoyed an impressive comeback in recent years.

Her recent Vegas residency as a sell-out and grossed almost £3million, while she also released her fifteenth studio album, Caution last year.
