At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Breaking up is complicated – and a new Reddit thread has laid bare some of the worst explanations people have been given at the end of their relationships.

Users of the website, which dubs itself the front page of the internet, were invited to answer the question: “What's the worst reason someone has broken up with you over?”

“Worst as in stupid reason or terrible act that was done,” the post clarified.

The questions sparked some 200 comments. Jaw-dropping reasons revealed on the Ask Reddit thread ranged from cruel jibes about the person’s appearance to frustrations over who pays for lunch.

Politics, kissing skills, and problems with possessive partners were also mentioned in the eye-oping thread.

The comment which received the most points from Reddit users told of how a US high school student had sex with an older pupil who later told him she was just testing his morals.
