A statement announcing the engagement was released by the royal family online.
“The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York to Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi,” the statement read.
“Her Royal Highness and Mr Mapelli Mozzi became engaged while away for the weekend in Italy earlier in the month.”
The statement added that Princess Beatrice and her fiancé will wed in 2020.
A photograph of Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi, which was taken in Italy by the royal’s sister, Princess Eugenie, was released following the announcement of their engagement.
The picture shows Princess Beatrice wearing a floral dress while embracing Mr Mapelli Mozzi, who is dressed in a dark navy suit.
In a joint statement, the betrothed couple said: “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement.
“We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married.”
The couple added that they share “so many similar interests and values”, which they believe will stand them in “great stead for the years ahead”.
A second photograph, showing a close-up of Princess Beatrice’s engagement, was also released with the news of the engagement.
Princess Eugenie, who wed Jack Brooksbank in October last year, expressed her excitement over her sister’s upcoming nuptials.
“Beabea – wow! I’m so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo,” the royal wrote in an Instagram caption.
“It’s been a long time coming and you two are meant to be.”
Mr Mapelli Mozzi’s parents, Nicki Williams-Ellis and Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, said they are “truly delighted” about their son’s engagement to Princess Beatrice.
“Our family has known Beatrice for most of her life,” the royal’s future in-laws said.
“Edo and Beatrice are made for each other, and their happiness and love for each other is there for all to see.”
Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi first started dating in autumn 2018.
The 31-year-old royal is ninth-in-line to the throne and cousin to the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge.
