Miley Cyrus has spoken out for the first time since announcing her split from Liam Hemsworth, who she married in December 2018.

The singer posted a series of scenic snaps on Instagram alongside thoughtful captions that referenced change and evolution.

While Cyrus did not directly reference her ex-husband, her words made it quite clear that she was going through a transition in her life.

“Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win,” the “Wrecking Ball” singer wrote underneath two photographs of her posing in the Dolomites mountain range in northeastern Italy.

“Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable,” Cyrus continued, adding that the Dolomites were “not created overnight”.

“My dad always told me ‘Nature never hurries but it is always on time’... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true.

"I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own.”

Cyrus posted another photograph of herself standing with the Italian mountains in the background alongside the caption: “New day. New adventure.”

The singer’s posts have garnered millions of likes and comments from fans and friends, including one from Ariana Grande, who wrote: “I love you”.

Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their split after eight months of marriage on Saturday.

A representative for Cyrus told PEOPLE: “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time.

“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.

“They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

The couple had 16 pets together, including seven dogs, three cats and two pigs.

Cyrus, 26, and Hemsworth, 29, tied the knot in December 2018 after dating on and off for almost a decade, having met in 2010 on the set of romantic drama The Last Song.
