Heart-breaking tales of what happens when marriage proposals go awry have been revealed.

Everyone loves a good engagement story - it’s the stuff fairy-tales are made of and undoubtedly one of the most important questions someone can ever ask - but what happens if things don’t go according to plan?

A Reddit discussion saw one user start the debate with the question: "People of Reddit who have been denied when they proposed, why did it happen and what was the end result?"

With more than 11,000 responses, the thread is full of men revealing what happened when they got down on one knee - and some are seriously brutal.

One person describes witnessing a stranger’s ruthless rejection saying: “I was walking through a park when a guy stopped me, handed me his phone and asked if I'd take a picture of him and his girlfriend.

“I ask where he wants to stand and what he wants in the picture. He ignores me and locks eyes with his girlfriend and reaches into his pocket as he drops to a knee. So I put it in video mode and record the whole thing.

“He makes his proposal. She starts crying. Then she blurts out “I f***ed Lenny!”

Another user confesses, “I proposed after 3ish years of dating and one year of living together and she said no. I was offering her my great-grandparents wedding ring. That was Friday night. By Sunday night, after a trip to her parents, she came back and told me that she was gay.”

Other admissions came from those giving the rejection, explaining their reasons for saying no.

MiloMollysaid, “After four weeks of dating he got down on his knee with a HUGE diamond ring and said a huge speech along the lines of “when you know you know. Will you marry me?

“Since I barely knew the guy I flat out said 'no' followed by “sorry...are you okay?” He didn't speak to me for the rest of the night and then when he dropped me home I get a text from him - YES A TEXT - saying “you've broken my heart. I never want to see you again. Goodbye. I love you.”

Among the myriad of gloomy denials though are some happy ever afters.

Morgsz shared his story saying, “Proposed to girlfriend after she got off work on a Monday with her favorite meal prepared, and the apartment all lit with candles, rose petals on the floor after having had a special weekend together.

“She said No no no! No! NO! when I asked her to marry me as she came in the door to our apartment. She worked in the medical field and had puke all over her. She showered then said yes.”

Perhaps out favourite of them all comes courtesy of Double J03 who happily admits, “She said no, I got a dog and a case of beer and lived happily ever after.”
