From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

On Sunday, the senator for California marked the milestone by sharing a photo of the couple smiling at each other at Thursday’s Democratic National Convention, which took place not long after Harris was chosen by presidential candidate Joe Biden as his running mate.
“@douglasemhoff, there’s no one I’d rather be with on this journey,” Harris wrote alongside the image. “Happy anniversary!”
In turn, Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer, also shared his own tribute on Instagram, posting a photo taken at the couple’s wedding, which was held at a California courthouse in 2014.
“Dearest Kamala: here’s to us, our family, friends and our beautiful life together,” he wrote in the caption.
“Wouldn’t change a thing. Happy Anniversary! Love, D.”
Emhoff could become the country's first “Second Gentleman” if Harris and former vice president Biden win the general election on 3 November.
“I can’t wait for America to get to know Doug,” Harris said earlier this month. “My family means everything to me.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, the couple were set up on a blind date in 2013 by Harris’s best friend.
In a 2019 essay for Elle magazine, Harris opened up about her relationship and what it was like to join her husband's family and become a stepmother to two children.
“Doug and I put a lot of thought into when and how I would first meet the kids,” she wrote.
When Harris did finally meet Emhoff’s children from his previous marriage, Cole and Ella, the prosecutor said she “had butterflies in my stomach.”
“Cole and Ella could not have been more welcoming,” Harris explained. “They are brilliant, talented, funny kids who have grown to be remarkable adults. I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in.”
Recently, Harris and Biden told People that their connection is forged in the same focus on family.
“That’s one of the things we have in common,” Harris said.
“My children don’t call me stepmum, they call me Momala. We’re a very modern family. Their mum is a close friend of mine...Joe and I have a similar feeling that really is how we approach leadership: family in every version that it comes.”
