From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Carole Baskin has come out as bisexual, saying that she could “just as easily have a wife as a husband”.

Speaking to PinkNews, the Tiger King star revealed that she also feels as if she was “born in the wrong body” and began exploring her sexuality in the 1980s.

“I was engaged to a psychologist, and that was his entire field, dealing with the LGBT+ community,” she told the publication.

“It was during the period when AIDS was just wreaking havoc around the world, and people were losing their loved ones, and so I became very close to people in that community then.”

The 59-year-old, who is currently competing on US dance competition, Dancing with the Stars, added that she felt like a tomboy growing up.

“I was always very male-oriented in the things I did… I never had any mothering instincts or anything, you know, I never played with dolls,” she said.

"And so I always thought that there was something off there, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

“But it was during the 1980s that I discovered that through dealing with the LGBT+ community that I [realised] I had just as equal feelings for women as I did for men."

The Big Cat Rescue owner continued: “I have always considered myself to be bisexual. Even though I’ve never had a wife, I could just as easily have a wife as a husband.

“As far as the way I feel about us, I think we are all one and I just don’t see us as being different genders or different colours or anything.”

Baskin has been married to animal rights activist Howard Baskin since 2004.

The Tiger King star’s first appearance on Dancing With The Stars in September was interrupted by a paid-for advert from the family of her second husband Don Lewis, who declared their intention to reward $100,000 (£80,000) to any individual with answers about his disappearance in 1997.

Baskin has always denied any involvement in Lewis’s disappearance and is not a suspect or person of interest in the ongoing case.
