From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Singer Lizzo has called on her army of fans to show themselves some love in a social media birthday request.

“The Good as Hell” singer asked her followers to say something nice about themselves in the comments underneath a post she shared on Instagram to celebrate her 32nd birthday on Monday.

“It’s my birthday, the best gift would be... say something nice about yourself in my comments and shake that a** ho,” Lizzo said in a caption accompanying the post.

And it looks as though Lizzo’s fans have responded to the request in spades – the post had received almost 50,000 responses by Tuesday morning.

“I am healing from pain & fear that was holding me back,” one fan wrote. “Happy birthday [Lizzo] thank you for choosing yourself over and over again. You are a blueprint. You are LIGHT.”

Another wrote: “Blessed to be living during the same time as you! Happy birthday queen!”

A third added: You make me happy to be a big woman..no cap I look up to people like you ...you are such an amazing inspiration I love you.”

Since lockdown began, Lizzo has been using her social media presence to speak candidly about how isolation is impacting mental health, Bustle reports.

She has hosted live meditation sessions to promote calm and also joined in Global Citizen’s One World: Together at Home virtual concert with a rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.”

“This quarantine has a lot of people suffering from mental health issues because we can’t get out and do our normal coping/self-care routines,” she wrote in a previous post on 20 April.

“Self-hatred was starting to creep up on me but I gotta remember I’m 110% that b*tch, love you!”

Late last month, Lizzo bought lunches for medical staff on the frontline of the virus outbreak in the US.

The University of Washington hospital in Seattle later thanked the “Juice” singer for providing food for its healthcare workers.

“Thank you @Lizzo for sending lunches to the UW Medical Center – Montlake Emergency Department today!” the hospital tweeted.
