Jesy Nelson has said that the social media trolling she has received has put her off having children.
Speaking to the Daily Mail’s You magazine, the 29-year-old explained how, prior to becoming famous, she never struggled with her body image.
“Before we got in the group, I never looked at myself and thought, ‘I don’t like that’ – I don’t think any of us did,” she said.
“I never thought, ‘Oh god, I’m fat’, and then we got in the industry, and we all started wanting to change things about ourselves.”
Nelson continued: “It makes me not want to have a kid. Those insecurities that we all have now because of social media, imagine having that embedded in you as a child?”
The singer has previously spoken out about the impact of social media trolling in a documentary, Odd One Out, in which she revealed that online abuse led her to attempt suicide.
In the documentary, which aired on BBC One last year, Nelson recalled being targeted by trolls on social media who criticised her appearance and told her to “kill [herself]”.The documentary prompted an outpouring of support for the musician from actors, politicians, reality TV stars and fans.
The singer’s most recent comments come after Nelson sparked concerns among fans after pulling out of the final episode of Little Mix’s reality TV show, Little Mix: The Search.
It has also been revealed that Nelson, 29, will not be performing at the MTV European Music Awards on Sunday (8 November).
A representative for Little Mix confirmed that Nelson was not well.
“Jesy is unwell and will not be appearing on tonight’s final of Little Mix The Search,” they said.
"She will also not be hosting or performing at tomorrow's MTV EMAs."
The Search, which is broadcast on the BBC, follows six new bands as they compete to join Little Mix on their next tour.
