Bond, car boot bargains and a best man’s speech
Bonjour mes amis! It's been a busy week for you Londoners. Here's Kronenbourg 1664's round up of the stand out watercooler moments from the last seven days. A bientôt!
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bye, Bye Bond
A fond farewell to Roger Moore, who has died at the age of (00)89. This self-effacing acteur described himself as “everyone’s second favourite James Bond”. Millions around the world disagree – you were supreme and we raise a glass of our favourite biere suprême to you Sir Roger. Adieu, et merci beaucoup.
Easy answers
No one relishes the job interview, bien sûr, but what is the hardest question? According to a survey, it is, “What are your weaknesses”. The correct answer, by the way, is: “I work too hard, I hate to blow my own trompette, and I have no patience with foolish questions.” As for the easiest question? “What’s the best lager from Alsace?” Non?
26-carat find
Quel inspiration for bargain hunters! An unnamed woman from Isleworth learned that the “costume jewellery” she bought for £10 at an Eighties car boot sale is a 26-carat diamond, and expected to go for £350,000 at a Sotherby’s auction. A mademoiselle’s best friend indeed!
Tree-mendous price
Zut alors! What is it with outdoor retreats, mes amis? Your obsession with sheds is one thing, but Chelsea Flower Show visitors were captivated by a handcrafted treehouse priced at £80,000. Considering its makers sold one for £1m, that’s a snip! Still, it’s the perfect place to sit back with a glass of Kronenbourg 1664.
Saluting the speech
Poor Justin Johannesson has been castigated for his risqué remarks at Pippa Middleton’s wedding to James Matthews (including one about the bride’s derriere). Yet surely the embarrassing best man’s speech is a crucial part of any British wedding, so we salute Justin for observing le tradition. Have a drink on us Justin. We won’t make a right royal fuss about it…
