At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Kate Garraway has updated fans on the condition of her husband, Derek Draper, after she revealed that he had emerged from a “deeper coma” and is now in a minimal state of consciousness.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband has been in hospital since March when he was placed in an induced coma after contracting Covid-19.

Now, Garraway has revealed that Draper is in a “very desperate situation”.

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, the 53-year-old said: “He sort of can’t wake-up”.

“Wonderfully his eyes are opening but we have no real knowledge of what he can see and feel and hear,” she added.

Garraway explained that the fact he is still alive, however, does give her “fantastic hope”.

“The doctors keep saying it is a miracle that he’s still alive,” she continued.

The presenter revealed that doctors have previously told her six times that her husband wasn’t going to make it.

“So he has been very, very sick,” she added. “The problem is it’s a new disease that nobody knows.

“It’s great that there are some flickers of hope. His lungs are starting to recover a little bit, his kidneys are doing better his liver is doing better but they don’t know how much better it can get.

“They don’t know how much better he can get and there’s just nothing to compare it with.”

Asked whether or not Draper had any underlying conditions that could have caused the severity of his condition, Garraway explained that there was “no explanation”.

“He was a little bit overweight,” she said before adding that there are “zero underlying conditions”.

Garraway revealed that she and Draper had planned to renew their wedding vows before he fell ill with coronavirus.

The presenter also announced that she was going to return to her role presenting on Good Morning Britain from 13 July.
