On Wednesday, the singer and actor shared a post on Instagram in which he admitted he “should have known better”.
Timberlake blamed drinking too much alcohol after he was photographed hand in hand with Alisha Wainwright in New Orleans, where they have both been filming the upcoming movie Palmer.
The former NSYNC singer added that he regretted his behaviour and that it “is not the example I want to set for my son” – referring to his only child with Biel, four-year-old Silas.
“I stay away from gossip as much as I can, but for my family I feel it is important to address recent rumours that are hurting the people I love,” Timberlake wrote.
“A few weeks ago I displayed a strong lapse in judgement – but let me be clear – nothing happened between me and my co-star.
“I drank way too much that night and I regret my behaviour. I should have known better. This is not the example I want to set for my son.
“I apologise to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be. This was not that.”
The 38-year-old concluded his statement by saying he was “incredibly proud to be working on Palmer” and that he was “looking forward to continuing to make this movie and excited for people to see it”.
Biel, who married Timberlake in 2012, is yet to comment on the photographs which were taken last month.
However, a representative for Wainwright has insisted that any interaction between the pair was completely innocent.
“There is no validity to this speculation. They are currently working on a project together. Members of the cast and crew were all together,” a spokesperson told People magazine.
