From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In a climate where sexual harassment allegations are making headlines almost daily, Jimmy Choo’s recent ad featuring Cara Delevingne is facing backlash for being “tone deaf".
Featuring Delevingne dressed for a night out in New York City wearing a sparkly red dress and equally sparkly shoes, the commercial features men catcalling, shouting “nice shoes, lady,” as she struts through city streets - and people on Twitter are not impressed.
Seemingly glorifying catcalls, many users have responded to the ad with dismay.
Delevingne has faced a large percentage of the backlash - despite the likelihood she was not involved in the production of the advert - because she has been outspoken in her advocacy of sexual harassment victims in recent months. Even coming forward as a Harvey Weinstein accuser, many people are surprised that Delevingne did not realise problematic areas of the commercial.
One Twitter user called out the ad for perpetuating the idea that women are just nice to look at, or just shiny objects.
Others pondered what Jimmy Choo could have been thinking when they created the commercial - especially considering the current climate.
According to many of the reactions, Jimmy Choo missed the mark with their recent advert - the catcalling they featured has received much more attention than the shoes.
