But, it’s only now that her status as a style icon is being officially recognised.
This morning, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced on Instagram that the singer will be honoured at this year’s ceremony with the coveted Fashion Icon award.
“The CFDA is thrilled to reveal #JenniferLopez is this year’s recipient of the Fashion Icon award at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards this June,” the caption reads.
“The CFDA Board of Directors is giving the actress, singer, dancer, and producer this award for her longstanding and global impact on fashion.”
Speaking of the news, chairwoman of the board Diane von Furstenberg said the decision was made based on the way Lopez uses fashion to “express confidence and power”.
“Both designers and fans look forward to her fashion statements," she explained.
Steven Kolb, president and CEO of the CFDA agreed, adding: “Jennifer Lopez’s style is bold, uninhibited, and always memorable.
“Designers, including many of our CFDA Members, love to dress her for both stage and private moments.”
Lopez has had a number of memorable fashion moments over the years, starting with the now-legendary Versace plunging tropical-print dress she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000.
Most recently, other standout looks include the mirrored Tom Ford column dress she wore to the 2019 Academy Awards, the bright pink Giambattista Valli haute couture gown she chose for the premiere of Second Act, and the bejewelled halter neck Ralph & Russo gown she accessorised with a wide-brimmed hat at this year's Grammys.
In receiving the coveted award, the 49-year-old joins the likes of past winners including Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Johnny Depp and Rihanna.
Lopez is expected to accept the award at the CFDA Awards on 3 June at the Brooklyn Museum.
Other winners at this year’s ceremony include Alexander McQueen’s creative director, Sarah Burton who has won the International Award, and Carine Roitfeld who will be presented with the Founder’s Award.
