From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

TV presenter James Corden has stopped eating meat after reading about animal welfare.

The host of The Late Late Show in America explained that he gave up eating meat at Christmas after reading a story about the mistreatment of elephants.

“At Christmas, I read a story about the mistreatment of elephants and realised I was upset about animal welfare while eating a bacon sandwich,” he told Radio Times Magazine.

“I thought, 'Well, you really can't be upset about elephants and not think about the pigs.

“I hope I can keep it up. I will certainly try.”

The former Gavin and Stacey actor, who shed six stone several years ago before taking up his role as a US chat show host, added that he plans to “phase out” fish next but that it will be a gradual process.

Vegetarianism and veganism have skyrocketed in recent years, with more people than ever before choosing to enjoy a plant-based life.

So much so, that a new survey by comparethemarket.com recently revealed that the number of vegans in the UK has soared from 540,000 in 2016 to 3.5 million: a figure that means seven per cent of Great Britain’s population are now shunning animal products altogether.

Corden also opened about his success revealing that he never thought he would become the star he is today.

“No one is more surprised than me,” he said of his achievements, which include a number of Emmy Awards and a TV Bafta.

“But I always knew I wanted to perform.

"The only time my school attendance record was 100 per cent was when we were rehearsing a play."

Corden has opened about his ongoing issues with food in the past and previously referred to bread as his dietary “nemesis.”

Speaking about a recent meal in a restaurant, he explained: “[I have] a sort of battle with food. Then they delivered this basket of warm, fresh bread,” he told The Sun.

“It's our nemesis, it's out to destroy us!”

The father-of-three also revealed that he has tried a number of fad diets and cutting out different food groups since his move to the States.

“I don't know what I'm on and off now," he said.

"I've been on some sort of cleanse but then I went out to this Oscar thing and before you know it I'm eating in In-N-Out Burger,” he said
