From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The presenter spoke out after a Twitter user mistook her for Nick Jonas’s wife.
The star quote-tweeted a social media user who had written: “Wait so did @nickjonas and @jameelajamil get divorced?”
The 35-year-old responded: “A different Indian woman who doesn’t look anything like me. @priyankachopra I believe they are very happy together still.”
Fans responded with their own experiences of being mistaken for other people.
One fan replied: “This reminds me of the time when everyone used to ask me if I was @Konnie_Huq sister cos I was the only Asian in the school and she was the only Asian on TV at the time.”
Another wrote: “Omg! Reminds me of being compared to @Konnie_Huq or Geeta from Eastenders!”
A third tweeted: “Telling that they didn’t get the wrong Jonas brother... who actually kinda look alike!”
Last year, Jamil opened up about her sexuality, revealing she considers herself to be bisexual, or possibly pansexual.
Speaking to The Times, The Good Place actress addressed the backlash she faced when she was appointed a judge on TV show Legendary, which is about drag ball culture, which prompted her to come out as queer, and led to further criticism.
“People are still kind of stuck in the linear and don’t understand the spectrum of sexuality,” Jamil said of the reaction.
“I guess I’m bisexual, but also quite fancy everyone,” she continued.
“I don’t know if that means that I’m pansexual. But I don’t just fancy cis straight men; I fancy everyone.”
Jamil has been in a relationship with British singer James Blake for five years.
“We moved in with each other almost as soon as we kissed,” she told the publication.
“It was supposed to be a temporary arrangement while he was finding a house and then it just never ended.”
