Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Most people feel the need to giggle when they see one of their friends wearing a winter hat. They are sometimes a bit silly, which is probably why lots of designers showed them in their winter collections this year. Trapper-style furry ones with great floppy ears were very popular - Iceberg, Rifat Ozbek, and Ferre all showed them. The prize for the biggest fuzzy trapper must go to Marni, who showed a white furry hat the size of a crash helmet, with "ears" down to the shoulders. Woolly ones that make you look like you should be wearing a pair of matching mittens are my favourites, though I would stop short of matching my hat to my jumper (see Todd Oldham's tea cosy offering in the main picture). Hats are massively practical, though, as they keep your head toastie and stop your ears from aching with the cold. Be careful before choosing an expensive designer hat, as they are the sort of items which easily go AWOL. Also, remember that wool can itch like mad and make you all hot and bothered, and certain hats can be very telling about your personality.
