Actor Idris Elba has responded to a request to share a throwback picture of himself from the mid-1990s after singer John Legend succeeded him as ”sexiest man alive”.

This week, it was announced that People magazine had granted the 10-time Grammy Award winner the “sexiest man alive” accolade, following in the footsteps of celebrities including footballer David Beckham, singer Blake Shelton and Jumanji star Dwayne Johnson.

Following the announcement of his win, Legend tweeted a side-by-side picture of himself from 1995 with a smouldering photo of Elba, writing: “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018 @IdrisElba as #SexiestManAlive. Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed.”

In response to Legend’s photo, his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, stated: “Let’s see an @idriselba pic from 1995 (prob still very hot).”

Elba was more than willing to fulfil Teigen’s request, promptly sharing a photograph of himself from around 25 years ago when he was in his early twenties.

Several Twitter users commented on Elba’s willingness to share his throwback picture without hesitation.

“When the man knows he’s fine, he’ll pull out that 25-year-old pic,” one person tweeted.

“This just isn’t fair. How in a blue hell are normal guys supposed to compete with this?” another remarked incredulously.

Teigen appeared to admit defeat over Elba’s photograph, tweeting her apologies to her husband.

“I tried!!!” she stated.

After the announcement of Legend’s “sexiest man alive” award, Teigen responded in a humorously sarcastic manner.

The Lip Sync Battle co-host tweeted that she had “fulfilled her dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive”, changing her Twitter bio to read: “Currently sleeping with People‘s sexiest man alive.”

Teigen later revealed that Legend’s new title has not changed any of the goings-on in their household, stating: “The sexiest man alive just made me a ham sandwich.”
