Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Multitaskers rejoice: a new line of fitness equipment now comes equipped with a built-in Android browser to let you check your email, watch YouTube, run virtual races, or shop online, all while getting fit.

"Smart" fitness equipment was a hot topic at last week’s annual Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco, with manufacturers NordicTrack, ProForm, and FreeMotion unveiling their new iFit Live treadmills and elliptical machines.

Hop on an iFit treadmill, for example, and you can create a running route using Google Maps that simulates live road running. Or compete in a virtual race against other iFit Live users signed on at the same time. Runners select a race to join, from famous marathon courses to scenic 5K routes and press start on the treadmill to begin. After the finish line, each runner can compare his or her ranking and results to other iFit Live competitors.

Products currently available with the Android-based tablet console are NordicTrack Elite 9500 Pro ($1,999), ProForm TrailRunner 4.0 ($1,699), ProForm Performance 1450 ($1,499), and FreeMotion 770 ($1,899).

Looking for a budget treadmill with lower tech features? Gold's Gym Maxx CrossWalk 650 is ideal for walkers and sells for $650/€485. The machine has plenty of programs, a quiet motor, and a good-size walking area, as well as nice cushioning and a power incline. Another option includes The Sole F85, which features a relatively low price point for a high-end machine ($2,000/€1,500), a long running surface, and a 15 percent incline.
