The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have named their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Buckingham Palace has said.

The baby's middle name Harrison means "son of Harry".

The palace has confirmed the baby will not be granted any courtesy titles, upon the request of Prince Harry and Meghan.

The newest member of the royal family was born in Windsor on 6 May and is seventh in line to the throne.

Speaking from St George's Hall at Windsor Castle today, the duchess said: "It's magic, it's pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I'm really happy."

Meghan added that her two-day old son "has the sweetest temperament" and is "really calm".

As Prince Harry and Meghan laughed, the duke said: "I don't know who he gets that from", adding that their child is a "bundle of joy".

The first pictures of Prince Harry and Meghan with their baby were released this morning.

The duchess went into labour in the early hours of the morning on Monday, with the duke by her side.

"We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019," the statement released by the palace read.

"Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz."

Following the birth of his son, Prince Harry spoke to the press in Windsor about his and Meghan's new arrival.

"I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning, a very healthy boy," the duke said.

"Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined.

"How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing, so I just wanted to share this with everybody."

Prior to the birth of the royal baby, Prince Harry and Meghan announced that they would not be posing for photographs with their newborn son immediately after the birth, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

Instead, the royal couple said they had "taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private”.

“The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family,” read a section of the statement.

Reacting to news of the palace’s statement, royal historian Sarah Gristwood told The Independent it was further evidence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's strong desire to do things their way.

“Both of them have been proving themselves very useful members of the younger generation of the royal family in recent years.”

Earlier this month, Kensington Palace announced it had launched a verified Instagram account, under the handle @sussexroyal, which went onto break the record for the fastest time to gain one million followers on Instagram.
