Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Now it might not even be necessary, as one parenting website is recruiting professionals to, quite literally, do the dirty work.
Childcare.co.uk originally advertised their “Nanny 999” nappy-changing service as an April Fool’s Day joke, however, after the British-based site was inundated with messages from parents requesting the service in earnest, they decided to make the prank a reality.
“We’ve seen a big rise in the demand for nappy changing help through our platform, and are now offering Nappy 999 responders for all your nappy-related emergencies,” a post on the site reads.
“We originally came up with the idea as an April Fool in 2018, but after receiving over 400,000 views on social media and being inundated with comments from people who thought it was genuinely a great idea, we've decided to launch the service for real!”
Parents will be charged £5 for each nappy changed and the “Uber-style” service aims to get nappy-changers around the UK to respond to requests within 10 minutes.
There are some qualifications required for the role, with Childcare.co.uk stating the applicants must have an enhanced DBS check and at least one year of childcare experience.
According to Childcare.co.uk, they have already received “hundreds of applications”.
Parents have voiced their excitement at the proposed service on Facebook, commenting on the website’s original April Fool’s post:
“If this wasn’t a April fools I would spend a fortune on this,” wrote one person.
“I would definitely pay for this for 3am poops,” added another.
“Ask any parent which job they hate doing the most, and we guarantee nappy changing is top of the list,” said Richard Conway, co-founder of Childcare.co.uk.
“We knew we wanted to do something to mark April Fool's Day this year and do something that is quite obviously a joke but also fun, but we never anticipated it would take off quite like this, who would have thought that nappy changing is a genuine service that's in demand?
“Many parents have told us that they wish they could hire someone to change their children's nappies, and now they can with this service.
“We've already had more than 100 providers sign-up, but we're quite a way away from having a Nappy 999 First Responder within 10 minutes of every household in the UK, and that's why we need even more people to get involved.”
